“How do I get my child started in BMX?”

It’s easy!  You just need to come by the registration office when the track is open and fill out a registration form, provide the birth certificate for proof of age, and pay the annual $45 fee.  Riders under the age of 18 need a parent/guardian signature on the registration form.  Once the rider is registered, they are a member of the National Bicycle League (NBL) and they can race at any of the 22 tracks in Florida or at others across the United States.

To ride, he will need to have a bike.  Most BMX bikes have 20 inch wheels.  Remove the fenders, kick stand, reflectors, pegs and front wheel brakes if they are on the bike.  If you need help, there are almost always some BMX dads at the track with tools and they will be glad to help out to get your new rider out on the track.  When you register your new rider, you will get a racing number plate to put on the front of the handlebars.  The last three numbers on your registration sheet go on the number plate.  That’s the “racing number” for your new rider.

Riders must wear long pants (jeans are OK), a long sleeve shirt or jersey, shoes like sneakers and they must wear a helmet.  The bike helmets used on the street are not safe enough for the track.  Helmets can be rented at the track for just $2 each night until you decide to buy one for just his (or her) head.

For the first time on the track, ask at the registration window for one of the experienced riders to go with him.  Most of the older riders are very happy to show “Rookies” how to get around the track and over the big jumps without falling.  New riders are always welcome and you will find that everyone is friendly and willing to help new riders and parents.  All our riders were Rookies once!

There are “New Riders Clinics” offered at least once a month.  They only cost $5.00 and they provide a lot of one-on-one instruction from experienced BMX riders without many other riders on the track.  Check the “schedule” on the web site main page for the next Clinic.  You must register and pay in advance for the clinic, and the time is well worth it…both for your new rider and for you.  Parents are always welcome on the track, too.

If your new rider wants to race, they will only race against other Rookies of the same age.  Sometimes local races mix some ages, but generally riders will be racing against others of the same age and experience level.

Welcome to BMX, and especially to Cape Coral BMX.

We are glad you are here!
